Growing up as a first-generation South Indian kid in Charlotte, NC, I frequently experienced a confusing pull between my cultural identities. But, if there’s one thing that helped me understand and keep my Indian identity alive, it was cooking. Specifically, watching my mom cook. The first thing she ever taught me how to make was the perfect cup of chaya (homestyle tea) and from there, it turned into this wonderful understanding of food and its ability to keep us connected and rooted in who we are.
I started The Familiar Kitchen to help not only myself, but those like me, seeking a way to relate to their born culture. To create a community inspired by keeping tradition alive in a modern, but respectful way.
Join me on my adventures through cooking classic Kerala-inspired dishes, some of my Southern favorites, and all the recipes in between.
